Adequate ventilation in the workplace is a requirement under current Health and Safety legislation. They recommend an air supply rate of between 5-8 litres per second for each occupant. In certain workplaces, windows and doors may provide adequate ventilation but in some case mechanical ventilation systems are appropriate.
Any ventilation that is installed needs to maintain humidity and ventilation at reasonable levels for those working in the space. Any ventilation system should remove and dilute warm humid air and provide air movement to create a sense of freshness without causing a draught. It is important that a workplace is not too hot or too cold and the acceptable temperature range is approximately between 15°C to 30°C depending on the type of work being carried out. If a workplace is too warm or too cold then it increases difficulties in concentrating or the likelihood of accidents occurring. It is commonplace for thermometers to be provided so the temperature can be measured.
It is also important that any mechanical equipment is regularly inspected an maintained once installed.
